I have worked with family firms for over 12 years. Clients have ranged from owners of publicly traded firms to small local businesses. In addition, I have worked in two family businesses with my own family members.

Michael L. Stern, Ph.D. specializes in providing focused consulting services to individuals, families, companies and organizations that recognize the importance of investing in their most valuable asset… people. In assisting clients in this process the firm focuses on the development and enhancement of the management and leadership potentials of our clients. Dr. Stern has combined his business experience with over 22 years of specialized training and experience in human behavior assessment and change to bring an integrated and experiential approach to his client’s projects. The business clients have included closely held, family owned, and publicly traded companies. In his work with clients Dr. Stern has worked with chief executives, management teams, family groups and individual contributors in the areas of management assessment and development, pre-employment assessment, promotion evaluation, careerpath development, conflict resolution, and organizational effectiveness. Dr. Stern’s focus when working on a project centers on helping the client in assessing the critical elements as well as realistic expectations for ongoing outcomes. To accomplish this task he works closely with the people involved to establish individual relationships that can be the foundation of individual growth and increased productivity.
Dr. Stern brings a number of tools as well as experiences to the table for his clients. In his work he utilizes the most current technologies and assessment tools available to make the process as efficient as possible. He uses these advanced tools to maximize the outcomes in such areas as leadership development, management development, team building, communication skills and performance enhancement. Dr. Stern has provided these services to a variety of clients that include information technology, transportation, advertising, manufacturing, personal services, banking and finance, and telecommunications industries.
Dr. Stern has also worked closely with members of the finance and investment banking community. Consulting and coaching engagements have included: CFO of $12 Billion division of multinational corporation; CEO of 2000 employee international consulting firm; partners of Big 5 accounting firms; presidents of publicly traded and privately held firms; and management of investment management firms.
As a member of the Family Firm Institute and the invitation-only Connecticut Family Business Study Group and Westchester Family Business Study Group, Dr. Stern actively works in a collaborative and consultative relationship with leading members of the finance and law community. These ongoing relationships include the premiere regional organizations in: asset-based lending (mid-market firms); private banking and trust management; registered investment advisors for high net worth individuals; the leading family business investment banking firm, and trust and estate law firms.
In recognition of his expertise in work with family firms, closely held firms, and high net worth individuals, Dr. Stern has become a consultant and member of the advisory board for the University of Connecticut School of Business Family Business Program. Since 1995, Dr. Stern has been a participant in PDFB-- a highly selective national family business think tank. He is also the recipient of a Certificate in Family Business Advising from the Family Firm Institute. He is a contributor to the Family Business Conflict Resolution Handbook (2003), published by Family Business Magazine.
Dr. Stern is also a Charter Principal in The Global Consulting Partnership™. Dr. Stern took his undergraduate training at California State University , Long Beach . He obtained his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Washington in Seattle . Advanced training in organizational development was obtained at National Training Laboratories. Dr. Stern was an intern at the National Institute of Mental Health, St. Elizabeths Hospital and a postdoctoral fellow in the Medical School of the University of Tennessee . Prior to establishing Michael Stern Consulting, he was a founding partner and Managing Director of Omni Health Associates, LLC the exclusive area strategic partner for outpatient mental health services for Blue Cross of Connecticut HMO and Yale Preferred Mental Health Network.
